Type Locality and Naming

Northernmost Taiwan. Upper formation of Sanxia Gr. The type section is located at Houlongxi, Miaoli County, Taiwan Province. It was named by Torii K. and Yoshimasa K. in 1931. Original definition was proposed by Ishizaka (1942).

Synonym: Gueichulin Fm


Lithology and Thickness

Lower part is characterized by the grayish white sandstone intercalated with dark grey shale; Middle part by gray to dark gray thick shale; Upper part by interbeds of gray and yellow moderately thick fine sandstone intercalated with thin shale. Calcareous nannofossils are abundant. The thickness is 700-1000 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Jinshui Fm is conformable in contact to the underlying Nanzhuang Fm.

Upper contact

Jinshui Fm is conformable in contact to the overlying Jinshui Fm, respectively.

Regional extent

The formation is distributed in Miaoli County.
